The architecture festival ZigZagCity offers an alternative route through the city centre of Rotterdam from Friday 20 April to Sunday 6 May 2012.
Discover hidden treausures in the Lijnbaankwartier that passers-by tend to miss. Architects and visual artists will transform courtyards and walkways into fun and relaxing places allowing you to escape from the hustle-and-bustle of the city. The opening of ZigZagCity is on Friday night 20 April (late night shopping) and coincides with the International Architecture Biennale Rotterdam (IABR). ZigZagCity will connect the central locations of IABR. Observatorium will create a 'build proposal' for the quiet but never beautiful courtyard next to the AAA shopping area and department stores of Lijnbaankwartier, the modernist pedestrian city center, that was opened 1953 after the bombing of Rotterdam in 1940. It was designed by architects Van den Broek & Bakema as a complete car-free zone and has been a testcase for numerous car-free shopping streets around the world.
